Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Finale – "Old Friends, New Planets"
Summary
- Captain Freeman's insurrection in the Lower Decks finale makes more sense than Picard's actions in Star Trek: Insurrection, as she risks everything to rescue her daughter and prevent a major threat.
- The Lower Decks finale had higher stakes than Star Trek: Insurrection, with Locarno possessing a Genesis Device capable of leveling a planet. Mariner's involvement adds a personal element and justifies Freeman's disobedience.
- Captain Freeman's actions are morally right regardless of the orders given by Starfleet, as the involvement of non-Federation worlds could lead to a disastrous outcome if Starfleet didn't intervene. Lower Decks season 4 is available on Paramount+.
Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) disobeys orders Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4's finale, and her insurrection makes more sense than Captain Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) in Star Trek: Insurrection. Although Lower Decks focuses on the ensigns and lieutenants of the USS Cerritos, Captain Freeman also has a significant presence on the show. Not only does Carol command the ship, but she also keeps an eye out for her daughter, Lt. Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome). Lower Decks season 4, episode 10, "Old Friends, New Planets," brings out the best in both Freeman and Mariner, as they work together to thwart disgraced Starfleet cadet Nick Locarno (Robert Duncan McNeill).
Throughout Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, a mysterious enemy has been attacking non-Federation ships and targeting former Starfleet officers. After Nick Locarno is revealed to be the one behind these attacks, he kidnaps Mariner, falsely believing that she will help him. Locarno has possession of a stolen Ferengi Genesis Device that could be used to wipe out all life on a planet, but Mariner takes it, sending Locarno and his allies on a wild goose chase. Despite orders from Starfleet to stand down, Captain Freeman goes after Locarno to rescue her daughter and prevent Locarno from endangering anyone else.
