It's hoped that Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 will find a new home as there are still loads of questions left to answer about Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Dal R'El (Brett Gray), and their crew. Shockingly, Paramount+ has announced that Prodigy season 2 is canceled and that season 1 will be deleted from the service. While the announcement stated that work would be completed on the 20 episodes that make up Prodigy season 2, there's no word yet on which network or streamer will pick up the show. It's a hugely disappointing development that means the loose threads from Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 may never be picked up.
A social media campaign and an online petition to save Star Trek: Prodigygives hope that the Hageman Brothers' stealth Star Trek: Voyager sequel will return elsewhere. While there's still hope for Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 it's worth looking at the unanswered questions left by the season 1 finale. With the USS Protostar destroyed, and Hologram Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) dead, attention turned to rescuing Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran) from the alternative future in which he and his crew are trapped.
10 What Else Is Different In Star Trek's Alternate 25th Century? Captain Chakotay is currently stranded 53 years in an alternate future where the planet Solum was ravaged by a civil war following First Contact with Starfleet and the Protostar. When the USS Protostar was destroyed in the Star Trek: Prodigy finale, it aborted this timeline because it would never make First Contact. However, Janeway and her crew will still have to travel to the alternate timeline to rescue Chakotay and the crew of the Protostar, so it will be interesting to see how differently history developed outside Solum.
The civil war on Solum was rooted in a conflict about whether the Vau N'kat should explore the possibility of diplomatic relations with the "aliens" of the United Federation of Planets. The Federation chose not to intervene in the civil war because it was outside their remit. It's interesting to ponder how that timeline's Chakotay, one of Star Trek: Voyager's former Maquis, would have responded to the Federation's non-intervention in a war that led to the near-extinction of the Vau N'kat.
9 How Will Gwyn Unite The Vau N'Kat? Gwyndala (Ella Purnell) won't be joining her former crew mates on their mission to rescue Chakotay. Instead, she'll be ensuring that history progresses along a more hopeful path by uniting her people ahead of their eventual First Contact with Starfleet. At this stage in their history, the Vau N'Kat believe that they're the only species in existence, which means that Gwyn will have her work cut for her to convince them otherwise. There's also the thorny temporal issue of what happens if Gwyn meets the younger version of her father, the Diviner (John Noble), and whether this meeting could cause even more complications for Star Trek: Prodigy's multiple timelines.
8 Is Janeway's New Ship The USS Voyager-A? With the Protostar gone, Dal R'El and his young friends need a new starship for Star Trek: Prodigy season 2. In the final scene of the Prodigy season 1 finale, Dal, Janeway, and the crew watched as a brand-new Protostar-class starship launched. However, Janeway made it clear that this wasn't their new starship for the mission ahead. She told her young charges that she has "a much bigger plan" which could mean a return to a refitted and repaired version of the USS Dauntless. More likely, however, is that Janeway is teasing the return of Voyager in Star Trek: Prodigy, perhaps the USS Voyager-A.
From the perspective of a viewer, if Janeway was taking the Dauntless to save Chakotay, she would have said so. The fact that she kept the identity of their ship a secret suggests that the Hageman Brothers were planning to unveil a brand-new Voyager as one of the big hooks for Prodigy season 2. A Star Trek: Picard season 3 Easter egg revealed that the USS Voyager-B was scheduled for launch in 2401. This is roughly 17 years after Prodigy's season 1 finale, which is more than enough time for the Voyager-A to be launched in the search for Chakotay.
