As a spinoff from Star Trek: Discovery, the newly announced Star Trek: Starfleet Academy can feature multiple members of the USS Discovery crew and other characters from its 32nd-century universe. Executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Starfleet Academy will focus on the first intake of cadets since the legendary institution reopened its doors following the devastating effects of the Burn. A focus on the young cadets makes it unlikely that Mary Wiseman, who plays Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly, will be a lead, but she could have a recurring role in shaping this next generation of Starfleet officers.
Keeping Tilly in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy would allow the show to build on the universe established by Star Trek: Discovery after it comes to an end with season 5. As an instructor at the Academy, Tilly could request the presence of her former crewmates as visiting tutors. Interestingly, the press release teased that Starfleet Academy will see the cadets face "a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself." Such a major threat would inevitably require the involvement of senior Starfleet officers, creating another possibility for Discovery characters to guest in the new series.
