Summary
- Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the biggest Star Trek show of 2024, but the lack of hype surrounding its release is strange.
- The show was reshoot and completed prior to the strikes, but there has been very little revealed about season 5 since the first trailer dropped in October 2022.
- The absence of a release date and new footage is frustrating, but a new trailer is necessary to boost excitement for the series and signal its strong return in 2024.
Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the biggest Star Trek show of 2024, but where is the hype? In March, Paramount+ announced that season 5 would also be the final season of Star Trek: Discovery and the series was effectively canceled. Discovery season 5 wasn't planned to be the end of the show, but reshoots commenced in April to craft a proper ending to make the season 5 finale a satisfying series finale for Star Trek: Discovery. This work was completed prior to the Writer's Guild of America strike that started in May and the SAG-AFTRA strike in July, but very little has been revealed about Discovery season 5 – even just to build hype – since the first trailer dropped in October 2022.
Hailed as a welcome change to a more adventurous tone, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will see Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) lead the hunt for "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy." This mystery booty also attracts other seekers, including two new alien characters, L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and Moll (Eve Harlow), as well as a new Starfleet Captain named Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). In lieu of full-court press for Discovery season 5 due to the strikes, Paramount+ released an exciting 5 minutes of footage at San Diego Comic-Con in July. But following the end of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, The Ready Room showed a "sneak peek" trailer for Discovery season 5 that was identical to the one released a year ago. That trailer can be seen at the 28:00 time stamp in the video below:
