The two huge Borg twists from Star Trek: Picard season 2 and 3 were first done by Star Trek: Voyager over two decades earlier. Stranded in the Delta Quadrant, it was inevitable that the USS Voyager would encounter the Borg Collective, but the Voyager writers' room prolonged this for as long as possible. Rather than immediately throw Voyager into the path of a Borg Cube, the return of the Borg was gradually teased out across season 3. After a dead drone was discovered on a jungle planet, the Borg made their first proper Star Trek: Voyager appearance in the episode "Unity", but there was a twist.
"Unity" started off with a fairly standard Star Trek set-up: Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran) crash-landed on an alien planet where he was nursed back to health by the locals. However, things took a darker turn when it was revealed that the local populace were rehabilitated Borg drones. After this reveal, "Unity" then went on to explore many of the Borg storylines from Star Trek: Picard, foreshadowing the end of the original Borg Collective and the rise of Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill) as a benevolent Borg Queen.
