Shaw is one of the most controversial new additions to Star Trek canon. Many fans were turned off by the USS Titan-A Captain's rudeness towards Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Captain Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), as well as his dead naming his First Officer, Commander Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). But Picard has revealed that Shaw's behavior is rooted in deep trauma.

The reason he's named Shaw is after Robert Shaw. 'Cause Quint would've been a little too on the nose. But at least it's informed by a man who has been through some severe trauma and put himself back together in a way that is deeply informed by that trauma… And for Shaw, never in his life thought he would ever have to look Jean-Luc Picard in the face.
