Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Picard Season 3, Episode 8 – "Surrender."Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 8 created the franchise's new Tasha Yar with a shocking character death. Lt. Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) was initially part of the main cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but the character was tragically killed toward the end of season 1. While Crosby did return to portray an alternate reality version of Yar, as well as the character's half-Romulan daughter Sela in later seasons, Yar herself was never brought back. Her death remains a polarizing decision for the franchise to this day.
In an interesting tribute to Yar, Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 8 included another character's death and evoked Tasha's exit from Star Trek: TNG season 1. After capturing the USS Titan in episode 7, Picard's season 3 villain Vadic (Amanda Plummer) held the Titan's bridge crew hostage in an effort to get Jack Crusher (Ed Speelers) to turn himself in. When Jack refused to give up, Vadic upped the stakes with an ultimatum: she would execute one member of the crew every ten minutes that Jack did not appear. Unfortunately, before Jack joined her on the bridge, Vadic did succeed in killing one notable member of the bridge crew.
