First Contact Day 2023 has come and gone without dropping any major Star Trek news that fans have been waiting for. April 5th is the date Star Trek celebrates as the day Zephram Cochrane (James Cromwell) met the Vulcans, as seen in Star Trek: First Contact. April 5th is celebrated as a holiday within the Star Trek universe, and it has also become a day when Star Trek on Paramount+ makes major announcements about the franchise. Until 2023, that is, which is ironic because 2023 marks 40 years until First Contact with the Vulcans occurs on April 5, 2063.
In the week prior to First Contact Day, Star Trek on Paramount+ made some surprise announcements. The release date for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 was set for June 15, 2023, approximately two months after the final episode of Star Trek: Picard season 3 streams on Paramount+. Star Trek: Lower Decks also received a late summer 2023 release date, with a confirmation that Mike McMahan's hit animated comedy will be back for season 5 as well. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 was also announced for a winter 2023 premiere. All of this seemed like a warm-up for even bigger Star Trek news to drop on First Contact Day – but that isn't what happened. Instead, fans were left waiting for the following Star Trek announcements still to come at an unknown date.
